Although it is not properly speaking a technique, the question is worth addressing as these works require a particular combination of methods and techniques which sets them apart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underground works comprise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the<strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> construction of shafts<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the treatment of existing shafts<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>shutting down of shafts<\/strong><\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Combined techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Underground works require a number of techniques to be applied in difficult-to-access, confined spaces (a constraining environment):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blasting works<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>retaining structures for frames and vaulted galleries (cintres TH)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nailing (or pinning)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>concreting methods (projected concrete, casing)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>injection (soil reinforcement)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>temporary and permanent shoring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drainage (pumping, draining\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reconnaissance drilling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>environmental treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"202\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/mtps.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/soutenement.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4033\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retaining structures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When dealing with altered soils or altered rocky terrains, several retaining techniques can be considered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>precast concrete elements (chiefly used with tunnel-boring machines)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>metal structures for vaulted tunnels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>projected reinforced or fiber concrete, sometimes associated with bolting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"239\" height=\"154\" src=\"https:\/\/mtps.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/creusement-galerie.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4034\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excavation techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several parameters need to be taken into account when boring shafts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>their geometry (size, verticality or horizontality, length\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>nature of the existing terrains (rock, soil\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hydrogeological conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In rocky environments, Blasting and techniques involving TBM are the most common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of soil two approaches are possible :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Blasting or excavation with BRH<\/strong><\/mark> (hydraulic rock splitter) after injection or prior nailing reinforcement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\">tunnel-boring<\/mark><\/strong> machines and retaining structures as work progresses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Underground works are generally expoed to <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>significant hydraulic strains<\/strong><\/mark>. Several operations may then be necessary: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>putting in place a drainage system in order to lower the high water table (pumping associated with drilling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>making unnels watertight as retaining structures are put in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>setting up a <strong>draining device<\/strong> associated with several <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\">environmental treatment devices within the tunnel itself<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rehabilitation and tunnel equipment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Underground works must be regularly maintained. Provisions have to be made for <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\">consolidation <\/mark>and <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\">drainage <\/mark>operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tunnels involve connected operations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>shutting off the access to unused shafs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>taking measures to provide vital space for the fauna (e.g. providing means of access for chiropterans and slithering animals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>installing outlet gates to remove external hydrostatic pressure (watter supply tunnels) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>installing stone traps ahead of pressure pipes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:20% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"55\" height=\"77\" src=\"https:\/\/mtps.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/gilles-MTPS-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4035 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ffe800\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gilles&#8217;s advice about underground works : <\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;In the case of rehabilitation or maintenance of wastewater draining tunnels, it is necessary to provide proper ventilation as well as individual lighting and an MX2 or Multigaz Minitor gas detector.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caution measures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is necessary to exercise caution as underground works may have a major impact on the environment.
